Algonquian Peoples of Long Island
Published in Hardcover by Heart of the Lakes Pub (March, 1997)
Author: John A. Strong
Average review score:

Outstanding Work on a Little-Researched Subject
Strong has written a clear, concise overview of a people too long overlooked in the history of New York State. His analysis of their lives, beliefs and eventual conquest by Dutch and English settlers provides an understanding of who they were and why the Europeans found it so easy to manipulate and pressure them into a marginal existence.

Alias Island by Donna Ward
"Alias Island" by Donna Ward is a very unpredictable story with all the best mystery element, sending you down other avenues and pointing you in the wrong direction. Of course, as a skilled mystery writer, this is essential. Until you are reading the last pages do you realize you had the "wrong" person for the murder attempts. Ms. Ward is a refreshing new writer who interjects her "dry humor and subtle wit". I liken her style to that of Rex Stout and his creation of Detective Nero Wolfe in "The Golden Spider". Ms. Ward takes great pains to introduce each character and paints a picture for the reader that allows you to reflect on a person you know that is just that way! I look forward to her next book and seeing where some of these characters go next. A MUST READ!

Alone in the Night: Lighthouses of Georgian Bay, Manitoulin Island and the North Channel with Video
Published in Paperback by Lynx Images (December, 1998)
Authors: Andrea Gutsche, Russell Floren, and Barbara Chisholm
Average review score:

An outstanding contribution
Part I of the book (Lighthouse Basics) deals with such questions as why the lighthouses were built, what they look (or looked) like, who kept them, and how they worked. It then goes on to describe more than 60 lighthouses, many of which disappeared long ago. The book contains a large number of old photos depicting the lighthouses as well as people associated with them, along with historical notes and anecdotes. A truly outstanding contribution to the history of lighthouses in Canada.

It's a wonderful read.
If you love Anne of Greengables and the rest of LM Montgomery's book, you'll love this one too. It's a great book for when you're curled up in your bed and it's cold out. Get it.

America's Linksland: A Century of Long Island Golf
Published in Hardcover by Sleeping Bear Press (April, 2002)
Authors: L. C. Lambrecht and William L. Quirin
Average review score:

The American Home of Golf
Long Island has some of the greatest golf courses in the world and Mr. Quirin as done a fabulous job of detailing many of these gems. The book is filled with breath-taking photography and excellent histories of the clubs and several of it's more famous members, along with historical matches played over these links the past 100 years. If you like golf course architecture, nature, and/or history...you will definitely enjoy this book. My dream has been to play many of these courses some summer, but I'm afraid that dream just became more expensive after reading this book!

Amorgos
Published in Paperback by Anvil Press Poetry (May, 1999)
Authors: Nikos Gatsos and Sally Purcell
Average review score:

Wonderful Verse
I was delighted to come across Gatsos book while perusing the bookshelves of the University of Arizona. But why are the best poets like Gatsos rarely found on the bookshelves of stores? Who knows, and I suppose it will always be that way. Notwithstanding, Gatsos proved a real treasure of intoxicating verse. He is right up there with the best of the modern Greek poets: Seferis, Eyltis, Tsatsos, Kindinis, Ritsos. For a truely enjoyable alternative to the Beats and the New York school, try Gatsos and his kin.

Ancient Grace: Inside the Cedar Sanctuary of Yakushima Island
Published in Hardcover by Viz Communications (May, 1992)
Authors: Hiroaki Yamashita and Seiji Horibuchi
Average review score:

Like no place on earth
I spent a week hiking the interior and scootering the perimeter of Yakushima & had the pleasure of meeting Hiroaki Yamashita. His photographs capture the spooky, spiritual, perfect beauty of this place that even the rapacious Japanese developers haven't screwed up too badly. It's so mountainous that even though it's only 32 miles or so around, there are parts of the island that have never been explored. If you get a chance, go, it's beautiful & unforgettable. If you can't go, get this book.

Anne of the Island
Published in CD-ROM by Quiet Vision (01 July, 1999)
Author: Lucy Maud Montgomery
Average review score:

The best book I can think of!
In this part of Anne's life she is off to college. She has an amazing four years, with a couple of new friends. She also has a lot of decisions to make about the rest of her life. This is definitely my favorite of all the Anne books! It also keeps up with the tradition of beautiful descriptions of the scenery, which isn't in Avonlea this time. I really urge anyone who liked Anne of Green Gables to read this book.
